Every blog should have a funny mom story. After all, laughter and amusement bring their own benefits to the table. Plus, they keep us parents from going completely insane! So here’s my story for you. Enjoy!
Why every woman should have a robe
When my first daughter turned one, we moved into my in-law’s spacious basement apartment. It had a separate entrance, its own address, and even a fireplace! Since I had known my in-laws for awhile by this point, I was totally comfortable living in near proximity to them.
What they weren’t prepared for is how much I liked to stay undressed (always in my apartment, I might add.) Impromptu knocks from the new upstairs neighbors often resulted in conversations through one inch door gaps or mad dashes to the bedroom for my favorite muumuu. It became a source of humor, especially between my mother-in-law and me.
There once was a day when I was doing the dishes in my underwear. While the kitchen didn’t have a window, you could see the sliding glass doors and windows that went out to the daylight basement patio. On this particular day, a flicker of motion from the patio caught my eye.
Oftentimes, I would see feral cats back there. We liked them since they kept the mice away. But when I looked up, I saw a man in a white uniform! He was modestly looking down as he sprayed and squeegeed our windows. I was mortified! For both of us!
In this quick second, I squatted behind my kitchen counter and then stealthily did the Donkey Kong/Napolean Dynamite run from the kitchen to the hallway, hoping HE wouldn’t notice that I noticed that he practically saw me naked.
It wasn’t until after I was dressed that he came in to do his other side business: carpet cleaning. He was conversationally nice and boring, not evening alluding to the fact that he had seen me in my unders just 30 minutes before. Bless his heart!
After that exciting episode, I kept my comfy college robe on whenever I didn’t feel like wearing my sweats.
Since then, the robe and I have formed a delightful friendship. We snuggle from early morning to about mid-afternoon, share yummy treats that we hide from the kids during the day, and once in awhile, I let it take a vacation in the laundry room. For this reason, I have decided to write an ode to my old friend, Blue. You can read it here.
